He is the author and editor of eleven books, including, and has written extensively on sectionalism, federalism, and political economy, with a particular emphasis on the political thought of Thomas Jefferson.

Ed Ayers is the winner of the 2013 National Humanities Medal, is President Emeritus and Tucker-Boatwright Professor of the Humanities at the University of Richmond. He is also President of the Organization of American Historians. Ed was formerly Professor of History at the University of Virginia and Dean of U.Va.’s Graduate School and College of Arts & Sciences. He has written and edited ten books, including, winner of the Bancroft Prize and the Beveridge Prize; and, a finalist for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize.
